Torog's Bane

Welcome to Thunderspire
Two parties enter, one party leaves

Having defeated Kalarel, the party returned to Winterhaven victorious. The next several days were spent in discussions between Lord Padraig and the Goblins of Shadowfell Keep.

The 14th was both the summer solstice and a Nerathi holiday, the Vigil of the Forgotten God. A public feast was held in the town square before nightfall and many of the locals spent the night at the local temple in observation of the holiday.

After satisfactorily concluding the first meetings with the Goblins, the party, now only Chrom, Akmenos, and Pankas, left to pursue Kalarel’s connection with the Bloodreavers. They traveled several days along the Trade Road, stopping in Fallcrest on the 21st to resupply. Following leads they acquired in Fallcrest, they set their sights further east and the party finally enters the Thunderspire on the 26th of Vir, beneath the auspicious sign of a large full moon.

26 Vir – 28 Vir

Following the Road of Lanterns through the Thunderspire Labyrinth, the party happened upon a group of Hobgoblins cornering a Halfling. Acting quickly, they rescued the Halfling and collected their first Bloodreaver kills. The Halfling, Rendil Halfmoon, led them to his family’s inn in the Seven-Pillared Hall, where they were offered a free room in gratitude for rescuing Rendil. The party crashed for the night and spent the next couple days learning their way around the Hall, while also investigating the Bloodreavers and their activities.

On the 28th, the three make their first excursion into the Labyrinth and assault the Chamber of Eyes. They quickly realize they are outnumbered and outmatched by the Bloodreavers based there and return to the Hall defeated but alive.

Convinced that they need a larger party, Chrom begins recruiting at the Halfmoon Inn. He befriends a large deva named Peleg and his sidekick, a Dwarf Druid named Korin, over drinks and the two agree to aid his party. Overhearing their conversation, a heavily armoured paladin wearing a cloak of raven feathers approaches and introduces herself as Svafa. She offers to join their party, as she is also working against the Bloodreavers.

Akmenos and Pankas, however, had grown impatient and left for the Chamber of Eyes while Chrom was busy. When Chrom discovered this he gathered the new recruits and they quickly set off to mount a rescue. In route to the Chamber of Eyes, a Satyr intercepted them and requested to accompany them in their travels. They recognized him as the bard from the inn and welcomed him to the party. Now with five members, Chrom renewed the assault on the Bloodreavers, but was repelled once more as the prolonged fights and mounting attrition wore at the party’s resolve. Turning back, the party regrouped in the Hall and prepared to make a final assault.

The next morning, Svafa announced that she had a pressing concern to address and would not be able to return to the Chamber of Eyes with the party. Chrom and the others set about recruiting another member and persuaded the Dragonborn barbarian, Fifi to help them. The rest of the day was spent planning and outfitting the party to finally clear the Chamber of Eyes.

On the morning of the third, the party set out for the Chamber of Eyes. They ran into a scouting party of Bloodreavers along the way, but managed to wipe them out before any could escape or raise the alarm. When they arrived at the chamber, they found the Hobgoblins packing crates and loading carts, as they prepared to abandon their base of operations after the frequent attacks. The party rushed in, slaughtering the unprepared Bloodreavers before finally encountering one of their elite, a twisted Minotaur that appeared to be part Beholder.

With the Chamber of Eyes finally cleared and no sign of their former party members, the group returned to the Halfmoon Inn to recuperate and plan their next steps.

The Kobold Menace and Zombie Infestations
The party discovers the meaning behind the name of Shadowfell Keep

After a night at the inn in Winterhaven, the group of adventurers paid a visit to the Lord Padraig concerning their promises to the Goblins. Though skeptical of their trustworthiness, without much in the way of an armed force Padraig was pleased to hear the Goblins might be coerced into leaving the farms and village unmolested and agreed to meet with an ambassador for the Goblins.

Satisfied with their meeting, the party returned to searching for the Kobolds menacing the area. Now nearly noon, they returned to the inn to find any locals who could provide direction to their search. With some aid and information, the group set out once more, searching in the area the Kobolds were known to attack most often. After a few hours of searching, they located a group and followed them to their lair. Akmenos and the elf took to the trees in order to use the height to their advantage, while Chrom and Pankas rushed the littered campsite on foot. A brief battle ensued though a few escaped into a cavern behind a nearby waterfall. The party pursued the fleeing Kobolds without hesitation and quickly found themselves facing a small colony of Kobolds led by an outcast Goblin.

Panicking, Pankas downed a strength potion he’d received from the elf wizard, only to realize it was a fast-acting laxative. Chrom and Akmenos tried to hold back the overwhelming number of kobolds so that Pankas could recover, while the elf used a rolling sphere of flame to protect their flank. Chrom finally struck down the leader and the few remaining Kobolds retreated from the caverns, leaving the party to loot whatever spoils remained. The exhausted party returned to Winterhaven shortly after dark with barely a sliver of moon to light their path.

After confirming the eradication of the Kobolds with Padraig and receiving their pay, the party agreed to return to Shadowfell Keep with Padraig’s invitation to the Goblins. They quickly resupplied and set out for the Keep. Along the way, the ran into a few undead that were dispatched easily, but worried them as to the condition of their new allies.

Entering the ruins of the Keep, they discovered the Goblins barricaded within their warrens while zombies and skeletons wandered the halls. The party slew those undead present and pressed the Goblins for aid in removing the menace. With a few Goblin warriors in tow, the party delved into the Keep’s catacombs, seeking the source of the undead incursion. The party cleared out the majority of undead before discovering the hidden entrance to what appeared like an ancient temple. Their Goblin henchmen refused to go further, so the party left them to finish clearing the floor while they investigated the strange room.

Inside they found several ghouls guarding a necromancer performing some vile ritual. They could tell it must be vile because of the blood involved. Not to mention the large, menacing portal in the background. The ensuing fight was brutal, but the party triumphed. However, as the necromancer was slain, a massive deformed hand reached through the portal and drug his body into the shadowy realm beyond. Looting the area, the party discovered a letter identifying the necromancer as Kalarel and implicating a group of slavers, the Bloodreavers, as his source of corpses.

The party returned to the surface to spend the night in the ruins beneath a moonless sky.

Winterhaven and the Keep on the Shadowfell
A prequel of what's to come...

On the eighth day of the fourth month, Vir, only a week before the summer solstice, a ragtag group of wanderers arrived in the small town of Winterhaven. Their leader, a bronze Dragonborn warrior named Chrom had heard tell of mercenary work in the region while in Fallcrest and recruited three others to accompany him: the Tieflings Akmenos and Pankas, a Warlock and Warlord respectively, and a female Elf mage who shall remain unnamed and be forever put from the memories of the party.

After a day and many misadventures spent in town, the party secured a map and promise of pay from the Lord of Winterhaven, Padraig. With the Keep on the Shadowfell in their sights, the group set forth to expunge the Kobolds menacing the local farmers and trade road.

To their surprise it wasn’t Kobolds they found within the keep, but Goblins. After several skirmishes with the Goblins of Shadowfell, the party found themselves in several old tunnels beneath the keep, where they encountered a massive ooze and through some cunning managed to defeat the creature. Barricading the ooze’s former room, they spent a night resting to recover and prepare to fight their way back through the goblins.

The next morning Chrom and party assaulted the Goblins, slaying several before taking one who surrendered prisoner. After bribing their Goblin prisoner, Kurd with promises of wealth and power, they secured the location of the Goblin leader and a secret route into his chambers. Sneaking through the secret passage, the party managed to surprise the Goblin King and slew him as he fled. As promised, the party appointed Kurd as the new Goblin King, before leaving the keep with promises of securing peace between the Goblins of Shadowfell and the Humans of Winterhaven.
